New-SPConfigurationDatabase – This SharePoint farm currently has pending upgrades

When installing SharePoint 2010, I came across a strange error. I had my PowerShell script ready to fire up the installation, but when run, the first command “New-SPConfigurationDatabase” already threw an exception:

“This SharePoint farm currently has pending upgrades.”

Apparently, this is caused by having the Office Web Apps binaries installed before running New-SPConfigurationDatabase.

I found a solution and ran the following command:

psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force

The script threw an exception, but did configure 1 setting. After that my script ran flawlessly!

A quick note: seems that configuring the configuration database with psconfig does not seem to have any issues.
